FOUCQUET & HIS LADIES

6)March. Louis Summoned Chancellor Ségway Ministers & Foucquet & hold them he was taking the reins. Foucquet he told  to employ Colbert.

AMBITION OF FOUCQUET

Foucquet did not take in seriously, determined he govern __ . & France himself __.  __ told Foucquet to explain whole financial situation & system, promising continued far our if Foucquet was sincere. Foucquet against all advise, pretented false account, while Colbert, appointed Intendants with special duty of watching Foucquet revealed the falsifications to Louis. __ tried to extra of sincere confession from Foucquet who he persisted; so much so that Colbert’s clerks openly prophesied his fall. Foucquet  threw himself at his feet at Font
aime  bleau. He murmured words of pardon but really Foucquet was already doomed.

FALL OF FOUCQUET

The possibility of private motives on his part (Mile de lavalle’wi) of no account L. & C. set about it with great diplomacy. Snag was his post as Attorn. Gen and pretended to devour him, C. led cons. to A.G, wondering why he didn’t sell it. Foucquet did, giving the £ 1,400,000 price as a gift to the king.

Aug. 1661 The court entertained at vaux strange visit, informality of L. to accept hospitality of man he had determined to ruin, & Fouquet’s madness at quiring such a clear proof of his own misappropriate of public money. __ more than ever set on ruining Fouquet.

Next step to reduce Fouquet’s Breton strongholds. King’s presence needed in Brittanys to ensure good harvest of taxed. On Fouquet’s strange advice, he visited Nantes.

ARREST OF FOUCQUET


5th sept 1661 summoned to a __ by __ at 7am. Meanwhile rouse searched. Arrested, moved from one prison to another. Object to tremendous wrath of people. Had to be protected from rage of mobs. Condemmend by society for commuting his love affairs paper. Compomising Mile De Meuneville & bringing many illustrasions  names in disrepute.
 
FOUCQUET FRIENDS IN TROUBLE


Apart from women, of  whom especially Mile de saude’ny zealously defended him, Jean Hesnault, who attached Colbert in a sonnet, widely circulated privately, Colbert was now ____.

3. Pierre Cornille, by praising fideldy of Pellisson shared it.
3. Loet rather touchingly but more cautiously declared his desire to help Foucquet “without disrespect to King” and later tried to deny many of Fouquet’s alleged crimes.
